iOS 14 Beta 8 is Out! – What’s New?

by birtanpublished on October 5, 2020

Hi everyone aaron here for zollotech and today apple released ios 14 developer beta 8. this is out to all ios 14 supported devices as well as probably by the time you're watching this video ios 14 public beta 8 and i'll let you know if that's out in the comments below now along with this apple also released watch os 7 beta 8 tvos 14 beta 8 as well as ipad os 14 beta 8. mac os big sur beta 7 which is one behind at this point maybe later this week or next week apple's a little bit behind with that

They usually release it after ios 14. now at the end of this video i'll talk about when to expect ios 14 gm or the golden master which releases to the public or is the final version that will release to the public and also when to expect ios 14. now this particular update came in at 101.1 megabytes on my iphone 11 pro max so let's go ahead and take a look at the build number and everything that's new now in case you hadn't heard already apple has an event planned for the 15th and on the 15th apple is expected to

Introduce apple watches and ipad air they are not expected to introduce new iphones although that could change the event should be a couple hours long so we'll have to wait and see but it'll be pretty interesting if they don't release iphones and instead wait until an event in october to do that now as far as this particular update let's take a look at the build number and take a look at what's new you can see the build number is 18a 5373a so a means we're at the end they count

Back down to the letter a prior to this it was b so we're very close to a final public release or gm version so i would expect that later on i'll talk about that in a little bit but as far as this particular version there is no new modem update so if you were having connectivity issues with your iphone 11 pro max or any of your other devices i haven't seen a modem update on those now as far as new features well there are a couple new features nothing

Major this is pretty locked down and finalized but let's take a look at them the first one is in the watch app so if we go over to the watch app you'll see some icons that are a little bit different and this now says app view so before it said app list so it says app view we also have some new icons for siri and others as well so if you look through here apple is tweaking them with messages and things like that so expect those maybe to be updated

Throughout ios watch os mac os and everything else to sort of unify everything now as far as those app dots at the bottom well apple just keeps changing them around so if we press and hold go into jiggle mode here i get into jiggle mode much faster it seems too so that has been sped up it seems like so again we'll go into jiggle mode on this device they keep moving the spacing here and in fact on the iphone 11 you can see it a little

Bit better so again let's go into jiggle mode here and the spacing around these dots from the the distance to the dock seems to have changed ever so slightly not a huge change but apple continually keeps updating it and changing it for some reason but that seemingly is just a small design tweak that they keep changing now in this update apple has seemingly updated some of the way you touch or interact with things with gestures and things like that so

What i mean by that is if we go into jiggle mode it's much quicker to get into jiggle mode and it has a little weird interaction there but if i swipe up from the bottom it doesn't seemingly cancel jiggle mode like it did on ios 14 beta 7. so i'll go into jiggle mode here and you'll see we're on jiggle mode with ios 14 beta 7 on the iphone 10r i'll swipe up and it cancels immediately i'll swipe up and it doesn't cancel now i actually have to hit done and then it cancels it so that's kind of

Interesting also when i go over to the widgets and i swipe up from the home page or from the bottom it doesn't go back to my main page that interaction i find to be a little bit annoying so on beta 7 i'm on the widget page swipe up it goes back home again widget page swipe up and go back home i can't do that on this beta i have to actually intentionally swipe to the right so it's a little bit of an annoyance it's a slight change not a huge deal but something i noticed that was different

Also with the music widget it seems to be more touch responsive meaning you can touch in more places and it brings you in more easily in fact on the beta 7 version sometimes i'm not sure i can get it to do it but sometimes it doesn't seemingly feel like you can touch on things when you touch in the middle you'll see there i touched and sometimes it doesn't react sometimes it does it reacts every time on beta 8. so they've fixed that at least now one thing they've removed or at least a couple people have told me

They've removed already is in wallpapers if we go to choose a wallpaper we go to stills they've actually removed ios 12 wallpapers some people had told me that they removed these before i'm seeing them removed now so no more ios 12 wallpapers this is what you've got maybe we'll have some new ones when ios 14 launches to the public now another slight change is thanks to my friend steve moser is some changes to the wording and exposure notification it's within the code but just some

Ever so slight wording changes nothing big but there are some changes there now also a viewer sent along something they found that was in beta 7 as well but it's so slight it's hard to feel so if you go into music play a song and then tap on lyrics i guess you don't have to play the song but press on lyrics there are there is a ever so slight haptic feedback so it was in beta 7 but i had to verify that but i didn't mention it before it's just something that's there so try it out you can barely feel it but it's

Definitely there and that is really it in this particular update but as far as issues that they're still working on well there's 21 known issues that still exist that they've mentioned in the notes but there's no mention of resolved issues so i've checked around i haven't really had any issues so far using this it seems to be pretty stable but i did try out a few apps for you such as pokemon go so pokemon go will not work it will need to be updated it seems like

But call of duty mobile does work so that is working i tried it on the ipad and speaking of the ipad there's nothing new in ipad os beta 8. nothing other than what i've mentioned already so no changes everything seems to be stable in fact beta 7 was super stable for me on this device as well so ipad os 14 beta 8 seems to be fine no issues i haven't had any issues with widgets everything's super smooth and reacts well so hopefully we don't have any additional issues it's what i use every day and i haven't

Had any issues now ios 14 beta 8 battery life will take a few days to measure so i'll cover that in my follow up but let's take a look at the battery life you'll see my battery health on my 11 pro max after about well almost a year at this point is 96 that's pretty good 80 after two years is normal according to apple so as long as you're within that range you should be fine but your ios updates do not affect the battery health it just simply remeasures the battery

And so all batteries degrade over time so hopefully someone invents a better one in the future now as you can see yesterday i got 4 hours and 10 minutes of screen on time and 6 hours and 27 minutes of screen off time with about 50 percent of battery usage maybe a little bit more so this is not phenomenal usage but because i had so much screen off time it seems to affect that and so in general i would expect 10 to 12 hours of screen

On time when the final version comes out just like you had before when the device came out for the first time and maybe they'll be able to improve it a little bit in the future with the gm so hopefully they will and of course i'll talk about it in my follow-up in a few days now as far as performance so far it feels super smooth in fact i would say this is the smoothest version i've seen so far so we'll wait for this to load it's the first time i've opened music so it's taking a moment

But we'll scroll here and on an iphone 6s plus it seems to be very responsive i'm having no issues you'll see the response is fine however you'll notice i still have a gap in the app docs or in the control center where the apps are for home so that's kind of interesting that it's still there but responsiveness speed everything else seems to be really nice on the iphone 11 the same is true nice and fast but let's take a look at the benchmarks and see what we got i

Ran it on all of these devices that you see here so let's go into geekbench wherever that is there we go and in geekbench you'll see that i scored 1329 for single core 3400 3410 for multi-core now this can vary from time to time but if we take a look at the history you can see on well today's the ninth so on the third it scored a little bit higher for single core and a little bit lower for multicore of course this can vary and that number is

Very slight so i would expect similar performance with this particular update now let's take a look at all of these devices from left to right i have the 2020 ipad pro 12.9 then i have the iphone 6s plus then the iphone 11 then the iphone 11 pro max so they're all seemingly doing well and i'm getting decent scores even on the 6s plus i checked the history it seems to be doing just fine and so it should be performing pretty well at this point as far as the betas

Are concerned so should you install ios 14 beta 8 well if you're on beta 7 then i would say absolutely so far it's super stable and fast it seems beta 7 was pretty good but of course i'll have a follow-up a little bit later this week or on sunday depending on when i normally do it but if i find anything else i'll let you know later this week as well now on top of that ios 14 gm or golden master that is the final version out to developers prior to the public release i would expect that this coming tuesday at the

Apple event now usually at the apple event afterward they'll have the gm version out or the golden master and then the following week usually we'll have a public release so usually the week of the 20th is what i'm thinking that's normally when apple actually releases those updates to the public so hopefully we'll see it the week of the 20th and that's really it this beta does not have a ton in it it's fairly stable and i wouldn't really expect anything to change at this point maybe a few things

By the public release now if you'd like to get your hands on this wallpaper of course i'll link it in the description like i normally do and if you haven't subscribed already please subscribe and if you enjoyed the video please give it a like as always thanks for watching i'll see you next time you
